Connection and Community
Huskies Helping Huskies' primary focus is to help CMS students and families in urgent need. Year round, we help with school supplies, toiletries, and groceries, and during the holidays, we work with partners in the community to give students a way to shop for holiday gifts for themselves and their families. This annual event, Shop With a Hero, takes place in December at the Roswell Walmart. Representatives from the Roswell Police and Fire Departments are there to help the students choose gifts and get to know each other while they shop.
This past year, one CMS student enjoyed getting to know his assigned police officer while they shopped, so he introduced her to his mom afterward. The three of them enjoyed breakfast together and mingled with other community members. The family and the officer chatted about holiday plans and things of common interest. It was a positive experience for all.
A few months later, the older sister of this student, accompanied by her mom and brother, attended a career fair through Roswell High School. Who did they see providing information about careers with the Roswell Police Department? It was the very same officer who had helped the brother shop for holiday gifts. They approached the officer to say hello, and the officer immediately remembered the mom and her son. She was happy to meet the sister too.
Our student and his family made a connection with a Roswell community worker and left the Shop With a Hero event feeling valued and respected. When they met again, that feeling was reinforced. Because of the Shop With a Hero event, the whole family feels more involved in our community and knows there are people in Roswell, even police officers, who know them and care about their wellbeing.
This knowledge is just as valuable as any gifts received at the event. HHH strives to surround our families with support, not only with food and supplies, but also with the certainty that they live in a community that cares.
Can you help us provide that certainty? We accept donations via PayPal and Venmo. Cash donations are applied to the current fundraising drive, which for March, is Spring Break Staycation--a collection to help meet students’ needs over the break.
Thank you for being a part of our community.
